18th Century Days

Each spring the Holliston Historical Society welcomes the town’s 3rd graders to spend a day immersed in activities common to people who lived in this area in the 18th century. Society members and parent volunteers from HEPO (Holliston Educators and Parents Organization) present topics that include hearth cooking, cross stitch, candle making, education, herbs, clothing, stenciling, and fun and games.

Parent volunteers make a commitment to present one workshop topic to four groups of children during the course of a morning or afternoon. During Orientation Night, which is held one or two weeks prior to that year’s 18th Century Days, volunteers receive instruction on the topic they will teach as well as tips on presenting the material. In addition, for those who want to “dress the part” (it is not required but a lot of fun!), hints on dressing 18th-century style will be shown. The Society has a collection of reproduction clothing that volunteers may wear for their scheduled day.

This year, Orientation Night will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. We ask volunteers to print out the background information on their topic and bring this to Orientation Night so they can take notes and be trained to present the information during the week of May 5-9, 2008.

If you would like to volunteer (or if you have volunteered and now find you have a conflict) please contact Judy Grosjean, Holliston Historical Society Education Chairperson, at 508-429-7474 or jhgrosjean@comcast.net.
